Other DAWs have less demanding disk requirements. Hopefully you Mac has a nice fast SSD and you can use that for the audio and VI samples and boot/system drive. Pay attention to the minimum systems requirements, if you are running hard drives (not SSD) then Pro Tools should have a dedicated audio drive, so you do have that cost. I'm not sure I understand the disk cost comment at all. There are many great DAWs that cost less than Pro Tools including Reaper, Ableton Live Lite, Logic Pro, and Garageband (yes seriously). So if using those you also have to pay attention to this driver compatibility table: (not officially supported may not mean does not run, but this is an end of life product).
